Ubatuba Waterfall

Just at the bottom of the winding mountain road that brings you down the escarpment to Ubatuba is a waterfall.

Pick up this waterfall and plonk it anywhere else, and people would come to see it.

Here, astonishingly, it is unlabelled and unnamed as far as I can tell, and a mere 30m from the side of the road. We only knew it was there because you can see glimpses of it as you drive past it.

This time, I stopped and spent some time taking some decent pictures of it.

We travelled a fairly familiar route to us now, the winding road down the escarpment that brings you to Ubatuba. We were staying at the Itamambua Eco Resort, which promised wildlife and a natural Atlantic forest preserve.

As soon as we hit the top of the escarpment, it started raining and did not stop again for the entire weekend.

The hotel had hung sugar-feeders near the forest, and placed out old fruits and it attracted all kinds of things - Hummingbirds, squirrels. We also encountered the local blue and yellow Siri crabs.

The Iguaçu birdpark just outside the gates to the national park is very nice. Big walk-through averies housing Macaws and Toucans and many other South American birds.

The Toucans are very obliging and friendly, happy to stand on the rails and pose for photos.

The Macuco Safari - a 2 km hike through the forest and a boat ride into the canyon and under the waterfall. The girls really loved the boat ride part, we got totally wet.

Hotel das Cataratas

The Belmond Hotel das Cataratas, the only hotel in the Iguaçu Falls National Park is excellent. Expensive as heart surgery, but excellent. Super friendly staff, beautiful rooms and great food. Across the road from the first view of the Falls and you get 24 hours access to the park.

Beware of the Quatis freely roaming the grounds!

The UNESCO World Heritage listed Iguaçu Falls have been on our list ever since we arrived in Brazil.

Flying in from São Paulo gives you the first glimpse of the falls. No photo does this place any justice - it is vast in every way - size, sound, length.

The Park is extremely well setup, no private vehicles are allowed entry and everything is done by bus. The result is clear views uncluttered by car parks and visitor centers.

We stayed at the Hotel das Cataratas right on the falls, and after checking in we immediately hit the trail to the Falls, just across the road.

The walk was spectacular and runs for about 2 kms along the top of the canyon on the Brazil side giving an ever changing view of the falls. The walk ends near the "Devils Throat" and a platform that takes you right out the very edge of the falls.

Simply breathtaking place. Go there man.

Relaxing on the beach, drinking beer and being knocked over by the waves. The girls had a ball.

Pão de Açúcar - Rio de Janeiro

We took the cable car to Pão de Açúcar / Sugarloaf Mountain. Feels significantly higher than it looks from the ground, the tallest peak seems to make its own weather and was shrouded in cloud while we were there.
