Kangaroo Island - Flinders Chase NP

Saturday, 10 February 2018 | link | tag | / Trips / Australia / South Australia / National Parks
A day trip to Flinders Chase NP and Remarkable Rocks.

A lovely drive through very scenic and winding roads on Kangaroo Island.

The park itself is very well set up. Excellent facilities and walkways at Admirals Arch and at Remarkable Rocks.

The girls really loved the seals - there were three kinds all lounging about on the rocks - Australian and New Zealand Fur Seals, and a few Seal Lions as well.

Hindmarch and Ingalalla Falls

Saturday, 20 August 2016 | link | tag | / Trips / Australia / South Australia
I day trip down to Yankalilla to see the Hindmarch and Ingalalla waterfalls. A very scenic drive and two lovely waterfalls. Ingalalla would probably make a nice spot for a swim in the warmer months.

Walking in Wilpena Pound

Saturday, 6 August 2016 | link | tag | / Trips / Australia / South Australia / National Parks
Isabella and I were up before dawn today to try and catch the 'golden hour' light on the mountains. It was -1 degrees and there was frost everywhere. We got some nice photos as the sunrise progressed and had the park all to ourselves it seems. We had a great show of mobs of kangaroos and emu parades.

After breakfast, we did some walking inside Wilpena Pound. The Hills Homestead, and Wangaraa lookouts and the Pound itself. We walked about 22km's throughout the morning, the girls did an amazing job.

Wilpena Pound and Brachina Gorge

Friday, 5 August 2016 | link | tag | / Trips / Australia / South Australia / National Parks
Today we drove through the Bunyeroo Gorge to get to the Brachina Gorge Geological Trail, the "Corridor Through Time'. The actual geological aspects of which weren't very clearly marked... Still, we enjoyed the changing rock structures and descriptions suggesting we were travelling backwards through time.

We stopped and had lunch on the Brachina Gorge road, and enjoyed the Rock Wallabies frolicking on the slopes.

After we were done for the day, we arranged a scenic flight over Wilpena Pound. Bud's first time in a Cesna, but the conditions were perfect.

Wilpena Pound, Flinders Ranges

Thursday, 4 August 2016 | link | tag | / Trips / Australia / South Australia / National Parks
A long weekend in the Flinders Ranges. Driving from Adelaide, its about 5 or 6 hours. A leisurely day, and we topped it off with a bit of digital experimenting with cameras in the dark and freezing cold, trying to get pictures of the Milky Way.

Sunday, 29 May 2016 | link | tag | / Trips / Peru
We had a very short time in Lima. We hired a taxi and he gave us a mini tour of the Historical part of the city, the Plaza del Armas, Plazma del San Martín and other lovely old buildings.

Moray and Salineras

Saturday, 28 May 2016 | link | tag | / Trips / Peru
We procured the services of a nice man and his taxi to drive us the ~50km out of Cusco to the Inca ruin called a 'Moray', a site of terraced circular depressions.

Their purpose is not certain, but the speculation is that it was used for experimenting with different agricultural crops - the depressions and depth of the terraces create a temperature and moisture differential.

We also visited the Salineras, a area of high mineral salt in the rocks is transformed into salt drying ponds terraced into the side of the mountain.
